Altar to Our Lady of the Shining Silver SunUsing the folkloric language and the bright vivid colors of Latin American retablos, a shrine presents the beatific highs and the exponentially nightmarish shades of losing touch with reality. Viewers change their position and discover hidden layers amidst candles, bottles, broken eyeglasses, and other found objects as illustrations and text detailing a person’s account of visions begin to animate subtly as one approaches the altar. Images of transcendence and duality make a psychotic break more approachable and understandable.
portrait of a memory in VHScollaboration with José OlivaresWhat makes people want to document their lives, obsessively updating personal artifacts, constantly looking at the past through the eyes of a collector? What sort of story emerges from those objects left behind? What makes video (especially analog video) so reflective of memory? Can the video image that represents memory actually supplant memory, colored by the characteristics of that medium (blurriness, blippiness, dull muted colors, video artifacts)?Portrait of a memory in vhs is an interactive video sculpture that shows the image of a 12 year-old girl projected through and reflected off of several different layers of surfaces. This girl is presented in the realm of abstraction: her image represents a memory or may be an extension of the past as an idea. This "ideal" state and her pure nature is also reflected in sound: three simple musical bell tones repeat, gentle suggestions of memory... The girl is from a different era, a more “analog” era– the 80s, the time of VHS video. With different iterations this memory becomes distorted or less defined, each impression reflects or influences the other and each image (or memory) takes on different qualities, different textures, and begins to take on a different form.
suburban odeis a multi-channel video installation projection-mapped to fit a grid of 9 windows. Images of suburban life work against each other rhythmically in an examination of the way that nature is kept at large in the suburban environment. Nature has a way of creeping in, reminding one that it is an illusion that man is separate from nature and invulnerable to death. People inside the space are invited to play within the projection of the images created, creating silhouettes that further contrast that which is contained with the unpredictable. i make up creation myths for youA mother attempts to fill the empty space of a loved one that has left her behind in a mixed-media animation of collage elements taken from various science magazines and text in the form of a short poem. [TRT 1:26]
mother cat skyIt can happen to you anywhere--Walking around in an industrial area, the blocks and patterns can repeat like a mantra, putting you into a lull, a hypnosis, a trance. In mother cat sky (2013) these types of moments of revery are taken out of its context and displayed, hung up like butterflies to be examined.
